Yellowstone fans were treated to back-to-back episodes by Paramount Network for the launch of Season 5 of the show.

Sunday night's two episodes ended with "The Sting of Wisdom," which saw the Duttons deal with political wolves opposing them, and some literal ones terrorizing their cattle.

In case you missed it, or if you want a refresher, here's a recap of what happened in Season 5, Episode 2 of Yellowstone.

The second episode picks up with a pivotal scene omitted from the first episode—the after-effects of the car crash. As we know, Monica and her son Tate survived, but the baby she was carrying died.

Tate wakes up in the car first and cuts himself out of his seat belt. Whilst injured, he struggles to get out of the car when he finds his mom in a field. She's still suffering through labor and tells her son to find a phone and call 911.

After the credits, the episode jumps ahead a few days as Tate is now sporting a cast on his broken arm. Kayce, who was not present at the crash, is comforting a recovering Monica. The father and son duo head out together and Kayce tells Tate that his mother may need some time. It's an ominous chain of events for the family, especially after Kayce "saw the end" of his relationship during a vision quest in Season 4.

Back at Yellowstone, we see Carter who has grown up since the end of the last season. He was seen briefly where his growth spurt was addressed. For anyone searching online, the role hasn't been recast, actor Finn Little has just grown a lot since he shot the last season in 2020.

Carter heads out on a ride with Lloyd and his newly adopted father Rip. Unfortunately, Carter's horse, which belongs to John, hits a badger hole, shattering its leg, while Carter is hurled off and breaks his arm. In an emotional moment, Rip is forced to put the horse down to avoid further suffering.

With a broken arm, Carter is told to pick up his saddle and walk it back to the barn.

In the governor's office, John is being told his tasks by a new assistant, Claire. Dismayed at how busy he is, he aims to delegate work by appointing Beth as his new chief of staff. She's not thrilled. As they go through his schedule, it becomes clear that John won't be "playing politics" and will only take meetings if he sees them as necessary to his vision. "Claire, if it has the word 'alliance' in the name, cancel it," he tells her.

John, Beth, Jamie, and Lynelle discuss how best to cancel the airport plans. Jamie and Lynelle explain the legal ramifications, but John and Beth remain determined.

After their meeting, Beth chases Jamie down to verbally terrorize him as usual. "Never contradict him again," Beth warns her brother after Jamie had argued with John. Jamie insists he's only trying to protect him and the ranch. Beth brings up Jamie's adoption to hurt him and reminds him how she "owns" him. She tells him she wants him home at the weekends where she can keep an eye on him.

"Say 'yes ma'am," Beth tells him in a creepy exchange.

Back at Kayce and Monica's home, they talk about coping with the death of their baby. Monica tells Kayce she wants to bury the baby at the ranch. She addresses his vision where she saw the end of them, but Kayce states he'll never let that happen.

The Yellowstone ranch hands are out on a ride when they find a cow that has been attacked by wolves, but Ryan doesn't think the wolves killed it. Rip says it doesn't matter because now they'll have a taste for beef.

Ryan urges for them to get livestock agents involved, but Rip is adamant they can deal with it themselves.

The previous scene with the wolves is the perfect set up for the introduction of a new character, Sarah Atwood. 1883 viewers will recognize her as Claire Dutton, but it appears in Yellowstone, she's no relation, and not planning on cozying up to the Duttons.

Atwood has been hired by Market Equities and is set to become an adversary to Beth in Season 5. She inherits the assistant that Beth mistreated in Season 4 and proves just as brutally honest as she was.

Making the first move, which is sure to irk Market Equities, John signs an executive order revoking the lease from Paradise Valley projects, including the planned airport and ski resort. Caroline Warner files a cease and desist and plans to sue the state in retaliation. While watching on television, Sarah notices Jamie's reluctance and plans to target him.

During a later meeting, John reveals he's placing the ranch in a conservation easement. Beth once again isn't thrilled with this news, informing him they'll "have no moves," no ability to sell any land, or develop further."

"We could lose the whole thing," Beth warns John. "But it will be whole, honey. It'll be whole."

Colby and Ryan were tasked with dealing with the wolf problem themselves, and in the dead of night, they head out to hunt them down, using some high-grade weaponry.

After shooting them, they discover the wolves were tagged. If the tags remain motionless for twelve hours, wardens come and investigate, which will put the whole ranch in danger. The wolves are in the public interest—and Ryan warns that if they find out members of the governor's ranch killed them illegally, there'll be a world of trouble for everyone.

When Rip is called, he informs them to remove the collars, to move in formation like a wolf pack. To alleviate the problem, they wrap them around logs and send them downstream. Unfortunately, the logs get caught, and it's likely they'll be found sooner rather than later.

This episode's flashback revisits a problem John Dutton faced several decades previously. Actor Josh Lucas portrays him with a strong mustache, and he investigates the mystery of dead animals on his land.

He takes out the Yellowstone Ranch helicopter, which we haven't seen for a couple of seasons, and finds a group of builders who are spraying a toxic substance on the weeds. The head of the works, Dick Weller, makes an enemy of John by refusing to back down.

Later on, John, joined by a young Rip, topples one of their vehicles, and sprays his house with the harmful substance. They also find Dick and seemingly spray him with it too, sending him screaming into the house in an effort to get it off of himself.

Back in the present day, John is enjoying a coffee at his ranch, a place he's not visited in a while. He tells Claire it takes everything they've got to maintain it all.
